Markdale Real Estate and Homes for Sale

As real estate agents who specialize in Markdale, let us be your guides to what Markdale Ontario has to offer as a neighbourhood to finding homes for sale in the area.

Markdale is situated in the Township of Glenelg, one of the central Townships of Grey County, bordered by Holland, Artemesia, Egremont and Bentinck. At one point in time the Grey and Bruce Railway passed through the important village of Markdale.

Markdale which was the only village of any size or importance was first settled, according to the Historical Atlas of Grey & Bruce Counties, by Mark Armstrong from Ireland. Mark was the founder of Markdale who arrived with his family in 1850. Mark Armstrong established a Post Office that was originally called East Glenelg. Other early names were W.J. McFarland who was born in Ireland and settled in 1863 where he was a supplier of dry goods, groceries and hardware. He was also a post master, a commission in B.R. and a member of council. The village had the best of mail, express and telegraphic facilities and a weekly newspaper called the expositor.

With a branch of the Saugeen River running through the town, it supplied such good water power that in 1896 electric lighting was installed. A complete waterworks system was in place in 1905 and streets were paved in 1933. As you will see today the town offers many fine brick buildings.

The village is a lively agricultural centre for some 1,400 residents and growing. The downtown core of Markdale still maintains a 'turn of the century' feel while offering modern products and services. Attractive parks, the host of festivals on the main street and a new residence for seniors enliven this village.

The area of Markdale is a favorite among artists and artisans, spinners and weavers. Many have made Markdale their permanent home or weekend retreat.

With Markdale being no more than two hours from the Toronto International Airport, 30 minutes to the Owen Sound airport and five hours to the U.S. boarder it sees many weekenders and permanent residence.

Come see the beauty of Markdale and the countryside as you are within minutes of the beautiful Beaver Valley to the East that offers excellent ski slopes, recreational and conference facilities.
