Durham was founded in 1842 by a Scottish traveler by the name of Archibald Hunter and it became one of the first ever self-sustaining communities in Canada through the flour and saw mills. It used to be the center of the livestock exchange for the surrounding Grey and Bruce counties.

Durham is located in the Municipality of West Grey at the Junction of Highway 4 and Highway 6 between Owen Sound and Guelph, east of Hanover with an approximate population of 2647 as per 2001 census. It was built around the Saugeen River and has three man-made dams. On the outskirts of Durham, there are several small communities, such as Varney, Dornoch, Aberdeen, Allan Park, Priceville and Holstein. Merits to its natural beauty of rolling hills and countryside views have become home for artists, writers and craftsmen. The thriving arts community includes an art gallery and annual arts events, including the Words Aloud spoken word festival.

For all those outdoor enthusiasts, the quant town offers a heritage walkway bridge where you have fishing, canoeing and kayaking with great spots for picnics or camping in the Durham Conservation Area, or vibrant scenery for trail hiking.

Durham has its own hospital with emergency facilities and a medical clinic that is equipped to handle most situations. The town also has its own police station that is patrolled by the municipality's West Grey Police and its own volunteer firefighter service and station. There is also a Canada Post building and a town hall.

Durham considers itself a hockey town and for the most-part it is true. Hockey is the most popular pastime and normally draws over 250 children and teens into its Minor Hockey system. Durham has won a number of All-Ontario Championships. The Durham Community Centre is also the home of The Durham Skating Club, which was founded in the 1950s.

Durham also offers soccer, baseball and curling. Most of Durham's soccer is played across from the Durham Community Centre at the Durham Soccer Field. Baseball is played outdoors behind the Durham Community Centre in the Durham Ball Parks and the Curling Rink is on the East end of town beside what was the Saugeen Valley Community School and has been a long enjoyed pastime for the people of Durham.

Dignified historical homes and commercial buildings with large yards are a part of this historical community, but seeing a recent influx of new homes and retirement dwellings, it's a community for all ages.
