Eugenia is a picturesque village with views in all seasons and is very popular with naturalists as it has the Bruce Trail which runs through the village offering a large network of trails and nature preserves.
In the 1850's Eugenia was the scene of a gold rush. The gold rush lasted about three weeks till it was discovered that the rock that looked like gold was called iron pyrite. Iron pyrite is known as a stone of protection.
Early in the days of Eugenia natives traveled along the Beaver River and saw the Eugenia falls. The natives called it "Ke-waid-dun-dot", (Sparkling Waters). The first white man to see the falls was a United Empire Loyalist from Massachusetts named Miller. Miller became one of the first council members of Many tourists have visited Eugenia and in the mid 1800's there were stairs built to the bottom of the gorge and visitors paid 10 cents to use them.
The natural beauty of Eugenia attracted many to settle in the area. Government surveyors came and a town plot was laid out. Streets were named after great battles, but the town itself was named after Empress Eugenie, Napoleon's new wife.
Three Purdy brothers settled and built the first house near Eugenia falls in 1858. They owned many lots in Large framed buildings were built with living quarters on the second floor with a store and post office on the main floor. The post office in Eugenia did not close until 1969.
A man by the name of William Hogg was impressed with the power at Eugenia Falls. He bought the falls and adjacent property. In 1895 William Hogg built a small electrical plant which became the first hydro generating plant in the district. This electrical plant supplied power to Eugenia and the Village of Two turbines were installed and drove a single generator and created about 40 horsepower. Hogg was ahead of his time.
Eugenia has many weekend and full time residents. The changing seasons offer much to see and do. It is a bustling little town with unique shops and restaurants. Baseball is the sport of choice played during the summer month, nearby skiing in the winter or ice fishing on the lake.
Eugenia is an hour and half away from Toronto and a short distance from Flesherton. Due to its proximity to Toronto, Owen Sound and Collingwood, Eugenia is a sought after location.
